Schiehallion - Nevil Meskalyne set up an experiment here with plumb lines in observatories on either side of the mountain to test whether the mass of the mountain would have an effect on gravitational pull. The mathematician who helped with the measurements for this experiment was Charles Hutton who, as part of his work, drew contour lines to describe the shape of the hill. This was the very first use of contour lines, which are now used Universally in mapping throughout the world.

Cairn's law states that 'mountain cairns multiply in direct proportion to the number of available stones to build them'.
